It was the 1968 Mexico Olympics: Tommie Smith and John Carlos raised their fists to protest the condition of African-Americans. These two American sprinters won the gold and bronze medals respectively in the 200-meter event of the Olympic events. The most watched sporting competition in the world took place in a tense atmosphere, the black American athletes wore the words "Olympic Project for Human Rights" on their uniforms to raise awareness of the condition of the black community in the United States.
